CENTERS OF CREATIVITY

Bay Area artist Judy Gittelsohn worked with 1000 Threads to produce "Centers of Creativity," a tribute to her mentor, Dr. Elias Katz. Dr. Katz, now in his 90s, tells the story of how he and his wife, Florence Ludens-Katz, in 1972 established "a model art center for people with disabilities," the NIAD (National Institute of Art and Disablitiies) Art Center. The artwork created at NIAD falls within the realm of "outsider," "disability" or "self-taught" artists.

Dr. Katz narrates the history of what have become four such centers, we become deeply engaged by the artists working in the NIAD studios. A rich sense of community is seen and felt as these artists create their work while interacting with each other.
